European Court of Justice Rules Out Use of Embryos and Their Cells From Genetic Research

Today, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) decided that human embryos and cells generated from them must not be patented. The EPP Group in the European Parliament welcomes this decision. Peter Liese (Germany), EPP Group spokesperson in the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee of the European Parliament said that "It has been very important throughout for the European Parliament to clearly define ethically-motivated boundaries in the Directive on Biotechnological Inventions. It is very good news that the ECJ has now ruled accordingly. We are in favour of research and development in biotechnology, but human beings must not be destroyed, not even in the early stages of their development". Dr Liese holds a PhD from the Institute of Human Genetics of the University of Bonn.
