Reforming the Common Agricultural Policy for a Sustainable European Countryside

The EU's Common Agricultural Policy accounted for some €58 bn of spending last year, almost half the annual EU budget. However, farming is fundamental to Europe's past, present and future, which is why the EU remains committed to supporting farmers through direct payments, market interventions and rural development. The European Commission has just unveiled the latest reforms to the CAP. EPP Group MEPs have been scrutinising these reforms closely, not least because under the Lisbon treaty the European Parliament is now equally responsible with the Council for CAP legislation. Available material includes soundbites from Commissioner Dacian Ciolos and MEPs Mairead McGuinness, Alex Dess, Elisabeth Köstinger and Michel Dantin.
