EPP Group backs climate neutral goal in European Green Deal
10 Dec 2019
It’s not just a deal. It’s kind of a promise that we make to our children and grandchildren. Because we clearly don’t own this planet. We’re looking after it for them and therefore we have a moral duty to protect it. And don’t underestimate what we are doing here. Becoming the first climate neutral continent in the world. It’s huge. It’s pretty much like putting a man on the moon.
Becoming climate neutral is actually taking responsibility for your actions. And that’s very much at the core of EPP and Christian Democrat politics. You make sure that the pollution you cause is either cleaned up or you avoid it.
So, if you are flying, we need to have synthetic fuels, alternative fuels that don’t pollute. Can we produce steel that is CO2 low or even, you know, neutral?
This is the challenge that we have. And if we do it in the right way, we actually create jobs in Europe as well.
You don’t put a man on the moon by just banning things or by just taxing things. You do that by having a huge plan and making sure that you use the best and the brightest to ensure that we, for example, have an industry that is smart and clean, that we keep jobs in Europe but in such a way that we also protect the environment
